Are you suffering with the symptom of menopause?
The symptoms of menopause attack most women at a particular time in their lives. Hot flashes, lack of sleep, and fatigue, together with the stressful demands of daily life in North America, can make coping with life a difficult challenge. Feelings of hopelessness are commonly an additional burden for women during this intensely painful time in their lives. Options for a better life are also unclear at this time. Menopausal and pre-menopausal women have one thing in common: they want to know the cause of their symptoms, and what they can do about them. The good news is there are many things that you can do to alleviate your menopausal symptoms naturally. By taking the right steps to restore your body to its natural hormonal balance, you can begin to feel and live better.
The problems start long before menopause and manifest more strongly when our body is going through the additional stress of fluctuating hormones.
Many women aren’t aware of the full spectrum of symptoms associated with menopause, and many are relieved to learn that what they are experiencing has an actual cause. Even though the average age of menopause is 52, symptoms can start months or even years before your period ends. Below are some of the most common symptoms that women experience:
Hot flashes and/or night sweats
Fatigue
Cravings for sweets or carbohydrates
Diminished sexual desire, vaginal dryness
Irritability, mood swings, depression, and/or anxiety
Insomnia or restless sleep
Fuzzy thinking (difficulty concentrating, memory problems)
Weight gain, especially around the middle
Stiffness and joint pain
Irregular periods
Other menopausal symptoms include worsening PMS, headaches, heart palpitations, thinning hair, dry skin, dry eyes, increased facial hair, urinary dysfunction, and digestive problems. You may have noticed one or two of these symptoms yourself in recent months — or you may be suffering from several. All of these symptoms have one thing in common: they are signs of hormonal imbalances which tend to peak during per menopause and menopause as your hormones begin to fluctuate.
The symptoms of menopause are exacerbated by external factors, such as the tremendous demands of both children and parents clamouring for our time and attention, our spouses demanding the same, hectic careers, and everyday living. I wonder if our ancestors struggled as much as we do with menopause.
I do not dispute the fact that fluctuations of our hormone levels have consequences but what I am convinced of is that not all these symptoms are solely because of the hormonal fluctuation. Our lives today were created from our lifestyle choices throughout the years. This in turn will impact on the severity of our menopausal symptoms and how we handle the changes that invariably come from this important transitional period. Why is it that even in the same family one woman suffers more than another? To say it is only bad luck is not only false, it is also disempowering.
The question we need to ask ourselves is: what can we do on a daily basis to help us be healthier? Toxicity and deficiency of proper nutrients for our cells will determine how we make the transition, and how healthy we will be after this transition.
The way we talk to ourselves about our world is important. How and what we eat is crucial. Whether we choose vegetables, fruit, proteins, and nuts versus processed foods and sweets is not the difference between a slim or heavy person; the difference lies in the happy, healthy cells that can sustain the stress of everyday life.
Exercise or lack of it will affect us as well. In another article I will discus the importance and benefits of regular exercise that goes far beyond a healthy, properly functioning heart. Suffice to say that exercise will also help to balance the hormones and its effect is greater than a slim waistline. It is a fact that weight training stimulates the production of repair and growth hormones. It is important to keep in mind those toxicities and deficiencies are cumulative. We may not feel the consequences of our poor lifestyle choices right away but when our body has an additional stress − like passage to menopause − the deficiencies and toxicities magnify.
Another important aspect is the proper functioning of our nervous system. Our nervous system controls all the functions in our bodies. If the spinal column is misaligned (which is the case for almost everyone in Western society because of sitting, accidents, and mental stress), it causes a decrease in nerve transmission. This can add extra stress on the individual who is already stressed to the maximum. The chiropractic check-up is one of the best ways to find out the current state of the nervous system. While I am not claiming that chiropractic adjustment is a cure for menopause, the research study by Dr. Hayek proves that chiropractic adjustment decreases the production of the stress hormone (Cortisol levels, anxiety level, and depression levels and significantly increased immune function. . This in turn has a positive effect on every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies.
The goal is to befriend our body during this transition and provide plenty of support in our daily lifestyle choices. In doing so, we will reap the benefit and also be able to function better in every endeavor we embark on. We’ve earned this period of our lives, and it does not have to be painful if we make responsible small choices daily.
When I mentioned to one of my patients that I am writing about menopause, she said, “I am so happy because I have suffered with this so much.” She then told me that because of her adjustments, not only has her knee pain diminished, she no longer limps when she gets into or out of the car, she wakes up happier, and she enjoys her own company. She is slowly incorporating better choices into her daily routine. Her menopause has not changed but she is changing and the menopause is not affecting her as badly.
